Overview

NetAid, in partnership with Cable Positive, is holding a contest for New York City public high school students to produce the best Public Service Announcement (PSA) video about the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The purpose of the contest is to educate young people about the AIDS pandemic and to encourage them to explore local and global solutions to combat the disease.

One video will be selected as the contest's official prize-winning entry, two videos will receive honorable mentions, and one video will receive the People's Choice award based on audience appeal.

Content

The theme of the contest is "What's Your Angle: Teens Take on AIDS." NetAid and Cable Positive seek the submission of 30-second videos that illustrate the link between poverty and HIV/AIDS and highlight solutions that young people can use to fight the disease in both local and global communities. Video entries can include anything from live action to animation to claymation.

We're looking for original, creative, and exciting ideas from students that deliver a clear message to their peers and suggest actions they can take to combat HIV/AIDS. Although there are some legal limitations on what participants can do (see below), it is up to the participants to create the content. NetAid has developed an e-training video which will provide participants with the knowledge, skills and perspectives they need to understand the issue and to craft a message that will inform other young people and motivate them to take action.

Eligibility

Any students attending a public high school in New York City are eligible. Because of our belief in the importance of dialogue and collaboration in the fight against HIV/AIDS, we encourage but do not require contest participants to work in teams of 3 to 5 members who attend the same high school.

Instructions

  1. Fill out the registration form. You can enter individually or as a leader of a team of 3 to 5 members.
  2. Watch NetAid's e-training video to get informed about the issues and gain the skills to craft your message.
  3. Create a 30-second video about solutions and actions that youth can take in the local and global fight against HIV/AIDS.
  4. Go to http://www.youtube.com/group/angle, join the contest group, and upload your video to the What's Your Angle: Teens Take on AIDS contest group.

Format and Length

The videos should be no longer than 30 seconds in length. We are accepting online submissions through the What's Your Angle: Teens Take on AIDS group on YouTube. Participants may upload video submissions to YouTube using any of the following formats: QuickTime .MOV, Windows .AVI, or .MPG files. YouTube recommends the MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format at 320x240 resolution with MP3 audio for optimal quality. In order to be considered for the People’s Choice award, entrants must submit their videos online. Submissions can also be submitted via postal mail in DVD or VHS format to:

NetAid
75 Broad Street, Ste. 2410
New York, NY 10004
Attn: HIV/AIDS PSA Contest

Deadlines

Registration takes place from December 1, 2006 to April 15, 2007. Public voting for the People's Choice selection will take place from April 16 to May 1, 2007. The winning team, two honorable mention winners, and one People's Choice winner will be notified in April followed by a public announcement in June.

Respect for Existing Copyright

You must be the original author of everything in your video or have written permission to use copyright protected material. In addition, you will need written consent from all actors appearing in your PSA to use their likenesses and voices, using the Model Release Form.

Judging Criteria

Once all the submissions are received, NetAid and Cable Positive staff will narrow the field to 10 semifinalists.  The semifinalists will then be judged by a distinguished panel of five judges, including Sunita Mehta, Executive Director of Funders Concerned with AIDS, Bari Zahn, Executive Director of Living Beyond Belief, along with staff members from NetAid and Cable Positive.

The judges will use the following criteria and the winning video will be based on the highest number of points:

    • Innovation and Creativity: setting, tone and style of PSA (weighted 25%)
    • Message: clarity and effectiveness in incorporating key messages about HIV/AIDS (weighted 25%)
    • Resonance: youth appeal and responsiveness (weighted 25%)
    • Action: effectiveness in engaging peers to get involved in the issue (weighted 25%)

The People’s Choice winner will be determined by votes cast (via the commenting section) by the general public on the YouTube website.

Prizes

The winning team will receive in-person training from video production experts to produce a professional version of their video at cable television studios. This video will be featured on both NetAid and Cable Positive's respective websites and will be screened at various other locations. The honorable mention and People's Choice videos will also be shown on our website and included in NetAid's newsletter, Connections, which reaches our national network of 50,000.
